Belly fat is the same as the rest of your body fat

——————————————————————————————–

The fat that we store around our abdomen (belly) is the same as the fat that we store every where else on our bodies but people seem to think this fat has a personality and is somewhat stubborn. The reality is that we just accumulate more fat in this area and therefore it takes longer to burn enough of it off to see the underlying muscles.

In today’s podcast we discuss the perception that belly fat is somehow stubborn and different from other kinds of fat. We also discuss how some people make the mistake of assuming that some amount of fat is actually loose skin.

Loose Skin After Weight Loss

—————————————————————————————————-

After rapid weight loss some people will end up with excess loose skin. This is determined by a number of factors including age, how much weight you lose and how fast you lose it.

What can be done about this loose skin? Is surgery the only treatment or are there other options? how do you know if you’re a candidate for having loose skin after a big weight reduction?

In this podcast we’ll discuss what causes loose skin after rapid weight loss and who might be susceptible to getting it.

We’ll also discuss body water and how it relates to the way you look vs fat and muscle.

Bryan Chung from www.evidencebasedfitness.blogspot.com will be joining us for this podcast.

P.S. I think I’ve actually got the volume problem fixed finally! (thanks to Bryan, I can’t take credit for it)

The Nutrition Industry is Big Money

———————————————————————————————————-

The nutrition industry is big money as it’s total revenue is above $100 billion dollars per year! This is nothing to sneeze at.

So with all of this money spent on healthy foods, vitamins supplements and the like wouldn’t you expect the population to be getting healthier and leaner?

Unfortunately you can’t purchase ‘weight loss’ and you can’t purchase ‘health’. Both are the result of your lifestyle and there is no amount of supplements and designer foods that will deliver.

In this podcast we’ll talk about the disconnect between nutrition and health products and what they’re doing for your health.

Money Doesn’t Lie

—————————————————————————————————

Your diet and eating patterns are a private issue that most people don’t know about. In fact even your closest family members/spouse may not really know exactly what you eat, when you eat it, or how much you eat.

BUT there is one thing that knows for sure…and that is your pocketbook. Unless you spend alot of money in cash, it’s actually pretty easy to get an indication of how someone eats just by viewing their bank statement and credit card statements.

Money doesn’t lie. Where you choose to spend your money will be a tell all sign for how you diet looks and what kind of results you can expect from your diet.

In this podcast we’ll discuss the national trends of the economics of food in the USA and how just looking at the money can predict weight gain.

War on Obesity…but not Really

You'll never see the claim "eat less"

—————————————————————————————

Apparently Michelle Obama plans to have a war on obesity (why is everyone in the whitehouse always declaring war on things?!?!) and stamp out childhood obesity. Although it sounds like a nobel cause it will go the square root of nowhere once she tries to actually implement any strategies.

The reason this is such a futile effort is because drastic changes require drastic action, and when it comes to weight loss claims and recommendations drastic action is NOT what any industry wants.

Of course the answer for weight loss is to simply eat less. But less of what? Beef? The cattlemans beef association will never let that pass as a policy recommendation. Dairy? The dairy council won’t let that happen. Grains? You know the gran producers will never go for that.

Nope, this initiative will just fade away into meaningless recommendations like “eat more healthy food”…the key word being MORE. The food industry will NEVER allow a national recommendation of eat LESS.

In this podcast we’ll discuss why this will never change and what the message of eat LESS for weight loss, always turns into eat MORE healthy food.

What Is Your Goal

What is your goal?

—————————————————————————————

Weight loss isn’t the goal, weight loss is how you think you’ll get to your goal…whatever that may be. My guess is that you’re assuming it will give you some or all of the following things:

1. Positive attention from other people (this could be admiration, envy, respect, even jealousy…whatever floats your boat)

2. Confidence

3. Self assurance (removing self doubt)

4. Is one less thing people may judge you on

5. Health/longevity (maybe)

…this is just my guess, and I’m sure there are many others that I’ve missed.

Weight loss doesn’t get you any of these things by itself, but actually getting to your goal weight might.

Weight loss without a specific final weight isn’t a goal it’s just a process. Once you define your goal weight, then you have a target. Without this target you can fall prey to endless fitness marketing products, systems and lifestyles that have their own measurable goals.

If you’re not clear and specific with your initial goal, you can end up adopting and committing to goals you’ve never chose for yourself (ex: building functional strength) and that never get you to your real underlying goals (see above list).

In today’s podcast we’ll discuss choosing your own goal vs. adopting someone else’s. Although this seems simple, it’s very easy to find yourself walking down a road you never chose.

just because something worked, doesn't mean you know how or why

How the hell does this thing work?

————————————————————————————————————–
Diet, fitness and supplement  marketers are trying to sell you a solution for one of two things (maybe both).

1. Weight loss

2. Muscle Building

Testimonials and before and afters are commonly used to show you WHAT happened…ie: the person lost weight, or the person gained muscle.

So far so good. It’s nice to know someone else manged to do it so you’ve got some hope that you can do it too. The problem comes in when these marketers try to explain to you HOW it happened and WHY it happened.

It’s the HOW and WHY that creates mass confusion about fitness and dieting and leads to Obsessive Compulsive Eating patterns.

In this podcast Brad and I discuss these points and show you how most fad diets are just confusing HOW and WHY weight loss or muscle building works.

John

P.S. There is a volume difference between Brad and I on this one, I’m really loud, he is much quieter…he is also in a kick ass coffee shop so bear with us…we’ll have it fixed by next weeks show.
