Diet and Fitness Fads – Mixing up the What How and Why
Posted by PhilifeFeb 3
1. Weight loss
2. Muscle Building
Testimonials and before and afters are commonly used to show you WHAT happened…ie: the person lost weight, or the person gained muscle.
So far so good. It’s nice to know someone else manged to do it so you’ve got some hope that you can do it too. The problem comes in when these marketers try to explain to you HOW it happened and WHY it happened.
It’s the HOW and WHY that creates mass confusion about fitness and dieting and leads to Obsessive Compulsive Eating patterns.
In this podcast Brad and I discuss these points and show you how most fad diets are just confusing HOW and WHY weight loss or muscle building works.
John
P.S. There is a volume difference between Brad and I on this one, I’m really loud, he is much quieter…he is also in a kick ass coffee shop so bear with us…we’ll have it fixed by next weeks show.

this is 33 1/3rpms played at 78rpms This is like listening to Alvin and the chipmunks only a lot faster. Maybe it’s the old Mac I’m listening on but the content is whipping way to fast for me to understand it.

Kurt,
Not sure what is going on with the audio on your end, it seems to be ok over here. Can you download the file and listen to it that way?

Hey John and Brad,
Thanks for adding some sense into this way too often nonsense world of diet and fitness.
And it’s useful to think about this in other areas of our lives since complex equivalences and cause-effect mix-ups affects us everywhere.

I really enjoyed listening to your conversation, especially the part about how much of life is still a puzzle that scientists are only beginning to piece together. I’m a research scientist, so I guess the ‘geek’ factor naturally appealled to me. I am always amazed at how uncomfortable people are with the idea that the ‘experts’ don’t know all the answers and that we who are ‘in the know’ aren’t upset with these gaps in our understanding of life. I guess that’s why new self-help books sell so well, because anyone who claims to ‘fully’ understand process X gives them comfort. I’m also surprised at how many people aren’t willing to take stock in their own experiences to tell them what works best for themselves, like the ‘experts’ know their body better than they do. Your goal of empowering people to run their own experiments and trust their own evaluation of the results is laudable. I look forward to your next podcast.
Thanks!

Hey, guys, great podcast. Shame that the audio on Brad’s end is not that good, especially for non-native english speakers like me, but I believe you guys have given it more sense, at least to me.
Greetings from Brazil!

Can you guys have a talk about High intensity training and static contraction training and the research behind these? I’ve found a lot of literature on single set training vs multiple sets, but I’m not good at telling whether a paper is significant or not.

Good discussion. Something to make it better would be to get Pilon a better mic. Sounds kind of low quality and sometimes hard to make out words. Johns mic is clear as mud.
Keep up the good work.
