Anabolic Slow Down
Posted by PhilifeJun 3
—————————————————————————————————————————–
The effectiveness of your weight training workouts might be dependent upon where you are in the anabolic continuum. This may be why different people get different results on the same workout program.
Where you are in the anabolic continuum may also be you best indicator of which exercise program to choose.
In todays podcast we’ll discuss the concept of Anabolic Slow Down and Anabolic Resistance, and your “Training Age” vs your “Biological Age”
We believe this is the biggest confounding variable in resistance training research and the reason why results are not consistent.

Damn, you guys blow me out with these podcasts. Ive just gotten started as a personal trainer, and these podcasts cover so many subjects that have made me so much better as a trainer.
Keep up the great work!!

This makes a ton of sense to me. We know that protein matters for some people sometimes; e.g.Tim Ferriss and his ability to put on 30lbs of muscle mass while decreasing body fat percentage in 30 days; it also explains why Mike Mentzer’s research showed that he had to use all different kinds of training methods to out on three more pounds after getting a perfect score at Mr. Olympia. Up to this point those two counterexamples made me very skeptical of some of the things you were saying about protein and working out.
I know you guys are focused on the right side of the continuum, what kind of workout and rest schedule do you recommend for someone who is all the way on the left side of the curve? I was in heart failure for many years and the result was a massive loss in muscle loss so I’m starting at nearly zero.

I am very intrigued by this theory. I have two questions. First, are you suggesting that there are some people that are simply non-responders…period? In other words, no kind of program, volume, intensity, or anything is going to make much of a difference? Or that, everyone will respond to resistance training to some extent (largely controlled by genetics) and it’s just a matter of finding out where you are on this continuum and designing your workout accordingly? Second, how in the hell do you suppose you’re going to figure all this out?? lol.

Guys, I’m loving this series on the Anabolic Continuum. I’ve also always wondered how one could do a long term study as that would be sooooo difficult to CONTROL.
However, I think we can agree that what’s most important is HOW we can apply all this to our workouts and optimize muscle growth. Have you guys come up with anything or is this still all building up to that eventual podcast? I know a lot of this is theorycrafting, but the anabolic continuum seems pretty damn reasonable to assume is true (if not already proven). I mean, doesn’t everyone go through ups and downs with muscle gains?
Hopefully the next podcast will talk about the practical applications of all this!

Discussion: Anabolic Slow Down…
Each person reacts to weight training differently and it’s not a matter of diet or protein but rather where you are on the Anabolic Continuum…

Good stuff guys!
You touched on this, but the placebo effect is very powerful.
Also, have you looked at any the current research on “extreme responders” in regard to muscle hypertrophy? Some very interesting stuff.
Rock on
